eating my way through singapore

after leaving bali, i made my way to singapore to meet up with pert who was already there. to be honest, there isn't really much to see in that city so really the main reason why one would go to singapore is to...EAT!  twist my arm.  pert also has some family and friends there so i got to meet them, and got to stay with one of his coworkers, ghitangeli (i may have butchered her name).  ghitangeli has an apt that their work pays for which is about the equivalent of the sheraton!  i was in heaven.  i think it was the cleanest i've felt all trip so far.

i was only in singapore for two days which was short, but enough time for me to successfully eat my way through the city!  i don't think i was ever hungry there because i was constantly eating.  that's the thing about singapore--it is a ridiculously expensive city, but eating is so cheap depending on where you go.  i should clarify that eating in food courts (in malls) and hawker centers are cheap.  yeah, that's right, the food courts in malls.  really they put to shame hot dog on a stick and the sbarro that we have in the us.  the food courts in these malls have food from everywhere and it's all made well.  i had to do a few rounds around the court to decide because everything looked heavenly.  hawker centers are open air markets with a large selection of food stalls to choose from as well.

the first night i got in, i had indian food from a hawker center which was fantastic!  i loved how they served the food.  there is a large population in singapore which meant a lot of indian food was available which was awesome.  this entree i got was simple but delicious--especially because it was nearing 11pm when i ate it.

the next day we went to the food court in the orchard mall and i had hainanese chicken rice.  the chicken is steamed i believe and the rice is mixed with ginger and other goodness that i'm not aware of which made it a delicious combo!  it is one of the more singaporian type dishes.  ghitangeli got a chinese bbq plate which had some amazing roasted duck and bbq pork.  i was in heaven!

that night, we had the infamous chili crab with several of pert's friends.  we went to no signboard which is a famous chili crab spot in singapore.  the reason its name is so bizarre is that the owners originally didn't have any signs when they sold their crab in the hawker center so people referred to them as the place with no signboard and the name stuck.  this crab was to die for!  i am a crab lover so i may be a little biased.  the crab is good--don't get me wrong, but it's really all about the sauce.  you eat it with rice, you can dip bread in it--you can do anything you want and it will be delicious because the sauce is amazing!  we also tried a salted egg crab that ghitangeli raved about and that was really good too.  we also had butter prawns which were the largest i've ever had in my life and wonderfully fried.  i left that meal a happy camper!

the next day we headed to another food court for lunch and i had laksa, which is another more traditional singaporian dish.  it's a seafood noodle dish that has a spicy thick coconut broth which is probably extremely high on the calorie count, but i decided that ignorance is bliss that meal.  i love spicy foods and this dish had the perfect amount of heat in it.  i was a little sad that i only got a small, but it was probably for the best.

our last meal was turkish food at alaturka on little arab street.  i didn't have much time to explore those streets but they were so cute so if you're ever there--go!  i've come to learn that turkish food is very similar to greek food.  we had an assortment of dishes which included a mezze plate with a lot of different dips, turkish pizza, lamb kebabs and a very tasty dessert called kunefe.  turkish pizza and kunefe was definitely new to me and i would high recommend them.  the pizza is definitely as it sounds, but instead of the toppings being on top, they were stuffed within the bread.  we had lamb and onions and it was delicious!  kunefe is a dessert with fried vermacelli like noodles (but i think it's just flour) that is shaped into one large mini wheat topped with nuts and drenched in the most amazing sauce that has a slight hint of cinnamon in it.  i usually don't have a sweet tooth but this was fantastic.

that thoroughly sums up my food consumption in my two short days in singapore so as you can see, i really wasn't lying when i say there wasn't a moment that my stomach had the hunger pains.  it was all so good and i'd do it all again if i could!
